If there’s one face paint design I know will get requested over and over again at kids parties… it’s butterflies.
Butterflies are one of those designs that never go out of style. They work for so many ages, they photograph beautifully, and parents absolutely love them.
That’s why I wanted to film this easy floral butterfly face paint tutorial and show exactly how I create one of my most requested party designs step-by-step.
Whether you’re learning face painting for fun, wanting a creative side hustle, or dreaming of starting your own party business, this design is one worth mastering.
Watch the Butterfly Face Paint Tutorial
In this video, I take you through my process for creating a colourful butterfly design that looks impressive but is still quick enough for real-life events.
One thing beginners often don’t realise is that successful face painting isn’t about creating complicated artwork…
It’s about creating designs that are:
- Fast
- Beautiful
- Repeatable
- Comfortable for children to wear
- Easy to recreate consistently
That’s exactly why this butterfly works so well.
My Simple Butterfly + Flower Technique
One of the reasons this design works so beautifully is because we keep the structure simple.
Instead of starting with large wings across the entire face, we first paint a small butterfly in the middle of the design to create a focal point.
From there, we surround the butterfly with double-dipped flowers throughout the design, building colour, movement and softness around the face.
This technique creates a design that feels full and impressive without becoming difficult to paint.
Double-dipped flowers are one of my favourite face painting techniques because they instantly add:
🦋 Dimension
🌸 Colour variation
✨ A more professional finished look
And the best part, they’re beginner friendly once you learn the brush loading technique.
Why Butterfly Designs Are So Popular at Parties
After painting at countless events, I’ve noticed butterflies are almost always among the top requests.
Kids love:
🦋 Bright colours
🌸 Pretty floral details
✨ Sparkly finishing touches
Parents love:
✔ Fast queue times
✔ Designs that look amazing in photos
✔ Children leaving excited and confident
When you have a strong butterfly design in your face painting menu, you’ll use it constantly.
