Whether you’re painting at parties or just practising at home, clean sponges help you achieve better results and maintain proper hygiene for every face you paint.

It’s easy to overlook sponge care, especially after a long event — but skipping this step can lead to:
By taking a few minutes to properly clean them, you’ll keep your tools fresh, safe, and ready to go every time.
Here’s the simple routine I follow after each face painting gig:
Place all the sponges you’ve used into a laundry tub or sink.
Fill the tub with warm water and add a small amount of liquid detergent. A mild laundry detergent (especially one made for delicates or wool) works really well, but dish soap is also a great option.
With the sponges submerged, gently squeeze and release them to work the detergent through. This helps lift out any paint and pigment trapped inside.
Once you’ve gone through all the sponges, drain the soapy water and refill with clean water. Rinse a few at a time, squeezing out any remaining soap until the water runs clear.
Lightly press the sponges to remove excess water. Avoid twisting them too harshly, as this can damage their shape.
Drying your sponges properly is just as important as washing them.
Lay them flat on a towel and let them dry in the sun, this is the easiest and fastest method.
If it’s cold or humid:
This prevents them from blowing around and helps them dry evenly.
